Seahawks notch 7-6 lacrosse win

A win is a win, even if it isn’t pretty or particularly efficient. Just ask the Cape Coral High girls’ lacrosse team.

The Seahawks ended a week’s layoff with a 7-6 victory Wednesday at Riverdale. The win locks down the No. 3 seed in their division for the playoffs that start April 14.

“Our shots were just not going in today,” said Seahawks coach Laurie Zinn. “We had plenty of shots, plenty of opportunities to score, but they weren’t going in.

Zinn said the Seahawks, who had been averaging 12 goals a game, got off “
at least 40 shots on goal.

Jamie Whetsell scored three goals to lead the Seahawks. Alex Gibson had two goals and Chloe Hutchins and Carly Boscarino each contributed one goal. Boscarino also made seven interceptions.

Cape goalkeeper Tara Murza stopped 19 shots to preserve the win.

It was not a good showing on our part, but fortunately we pulled it out in the end,” said Zinn.

The Seahawks (3-4) take another week off before playing at Fort Myers High next Wednesday.
