By Staff | Jul 11, 2009

Jeff Niemann pitched a six-hitter and the Tampa Bay Rays got home runs from Carlos Pena and Evan Longoria to beat the Oakland Athletics 6-0 Friday night.

Niemann (8-4), the Rays’ No. 5 starter, has two shutouts this season. The 6-foot-9 right-hander, who is 6-1 over his last 10 starts, allowed two hits in a 2-0 win over Kansas City on June 3.

Pena hit his 24th homer and Longoria added a solo shot for Tampa Bay, which has won nine straight at home.

Vin Mazzaro (2-5) allowed three runs and seven hits over five innings in losing his fifth straight decision. The Athletics have lost 11 of 15.

Pena made it 2-0 with a solo homer in the fourth. Longoria snapped an 18-game homerless stretch with his 17th, and Pat Burrell hit an RBI double in the seventh.
