Spring Training Report: Twins rally on struggling O’s
Matt Albers’ bid to earn a place in Baltimore’s starting rotation is probably over. If David Pauley doesn’t start pitching better, his hopes of joining the rotation also will end.
Pauley struggled at the outset, and pinch-hitter Matt Macri delivered a two-run double off Albers in the seventh inning to carry the Minnesota Twins past the Orioles 4-3 Wednesday.
Ty Wigginton had three hits for Baltimore, including an RBI single off Twins closer Joe Nathan that broke a 2-2 tie in the fifth.
The first three Twins reached against Albers, beginning with Jason Kubel, who singled and went to third on Michael Cuddyer’s second double. Macri, batting for Brian Buscher, followed with his double to left.
Kubel and Cuddyer both had three hits.
The Twins scored twice off Pauley in the first, with five of the first six batters reaching base. Kubel had a run-scoring single and Cuddyer followed with an RBI double.
Adam Jones saved Pauley from absorbing more damage by making a diving catch in center field of a sinking liner from Mike Redmond and throwing to second base to double off Cuddyer.
Cardinals 8, Marlins 4: Well into spring training, St. Louis’ second base experiment is far from a success.
Manager Tony La Russa is sticking with converted outfielder Skip Schumaker, who committed his fourth error Wednesday, but Schumaker will be the designated hitter Thursday against Boston, giving him a chance to rest his legs and perhaps clear his head.
Todd Wellemeyer worked five innings in his third spring start, allowing one earned run and three hits. Wellemeyer, a 13-game winner in his first full year as a starter, was the first St. Louis pitcher to go five innings.
Tigers 7, Yankees 4: CC Sabathia allowed too many hits. Justin Verlander walked too many batters.
Despite struggling in Detroit’s win over the Yankees, both pitchers were not overly concerned.
All five runs off Sabathia came in the second, when Gary Sheffield hit the first of his two home runs.
Manny bobblehead: Manny Ramirez is getting his own bobblehead. The slugger who recently agreed to a $45 million, two-year deal to stay with the Los Angeles Dodgers will be commemorated with a dreadlocked version of himself. The first 50,000 fans in attendance will receive the doll July 22 against Cincinnati.
Mauer’s back: Minnesota Twins catcher Joe Mauer will take a stronger dosage of anti-inflammatory medicine to try to hasten his recovery from a lower-back problem.
Mauer hasn’t played yet this spring training. He had a dye-injection MRI Tuesday to identify any previously undetected issues. Manager Ron Gardenhire says the diagnosis was the same as before.
Utility out: Florida Marlins utility player Alfredo Amezaga was diagnosed with a sprained left knee that’s expected to sideline him four to six weeks.
