Hurricanes cling to 62-55 victory
Jack McClinton scored just 11 points, well below his average, but hit a huge three-pointer with 47 seconds to play Thursday night to give Miami a two-possession cushion and the Hurricanes held on to beat Virginia 62-55.
The Hurricanes (17-10, 6-8 Atlantic Coast Conference) had been in a freefall of late, losing six of their last seven, but got some clutch shooting from McClinton when it mattered most down the stretch. His third three-pointer gave Miami a 60-55 lead and he added two free throws with 19 seconds left.
Virginia (9-15, 3-10) had won two straight at home, but failed to score after Jeff Jones’ three-pointer produced the eighth tie of the half at 55 with 3:51 remaining. The Cavaliers committed turnovers on three consecutive possessions after pulling even, causing them to fall behind.
Brian Asbury led Miami with 13 points, including the putback with 2:47 left that put the Hurricanes ahead to stay. McClinton, who entered the game averaging 20.1 points, shot just 3-for-10 from the field.
Jones led Virginia with 16 points and Sylven Landesberg had 13, 11 in the first half.
Neither team led by more than three through most of the second half until the final minutes, when McClinton got free in the right corner and swished the three-pointer to seal it.
Landesberg hit three three-pointers in less than four minutes as Virginia took a 17-7 lead after 8 1/2 minutes. The Hurricanes immediately followed with a 12-2 run, pulling them even at 19. Neither team led by more than four the rest of the half, which ended tied at 29.
