Kudos to tournament organizer, volunteers

To the editor:

Not so long ago some members from the Leo’s club and I had the chance to experience what it felt like to be blind. Although for us it was slightly dizzying and maybe even kind of entertaining, it was due to the fact that we knew that once we took our blindfolds off we would be able to see again.

Everything that I am aware of is measured through my sight. I measure distances by seeing how far a point is from where I’m standing. I can normally see where things are, what they are, or where they’re going with my sense of sight, but when I played golf with a blindfold stripping me of the most reliable sense, it was the most confusing feeling in the world. I didn’t know where I was, walking seemed eternal because I didn’t see how much ground I was covering or where I was going , and when I managed to hit the ball, I didn’t even know if it was headed in the right direction.

There were, of course, people ready to help us and guide us through the course, and their contribution made the game a lot shorter than it would’ve been if they weren’t there, I often found that no matter how close I thought I was to the hole, the little ball would never get there.

My deepest respect goes to Mike Ulrich, who organized this event. It was a fun way for everyone to be able to participate and pass time with a twist. I don’t know how he can organize these events and participate in them, but it’s a clear way of keeping the blind community upbeat. I hope that there are more events like this because they are truly inspirational and learning moments.
