Schools taking on too much authority

By Staff | Jul 30, 2011

To the editor:

I am more than able to provide supplies for “my” daughter. What I object to is the supplies I buy for my daughter being taken and put in a “pool” to supply the whole classroom; especially when Title 1 schools receive federal funding to supply low income families.

While I am at it; I also object to some principle being able to dictate to me what type and color clothing I have to purchase for my children. Where does that authority come from? Talk about mission creep; from dress code (which is fine within reason) to dictating to parents what type and color clothing they must purchase in order to attend a public school. Why not just require they all wear black pajamas; a la Chairman Mao. Sheeple wake up!

School uniforms are a burden to low- income families. Low-income families must now buy regular street clothing and special clothing for school. I thought the purpose of Title 1 schools was to assist the low-income segment of the population, not place an additional burden on them. Secondly, in my opinion, requiring uniforms is just another step in the process of attempting to crank out mindless, conformist, group think clones with a herd mentality who have been instructed what to think instead of how to think. (Instruction geared to doing well on FCAT.)
