Let the people of Cape Coral decide
To the editor:
Nov. 17 is Eric Feichthaler’s last day in office as mayor of Cape Coral. As it stands right now, the position of mayor is to be determined by the members of the Cape Coral City Council. To date, 21 people, three of which are current council members, have taken applications for the vacancy. On Nov. 3 the council will vote on their appointee.
Mayor Feichthaler is currently seeking a way to preserve democracy and hold a special election to give the people the opportunity to select their mayor.
This is the right choice for the citizens of Cape Coral.
Granting the council the power to appoint the next mayor will certainly not be in the best interest of the people of the city. Personal agendas amongst council members will play too large of a role in a decision that should be left to the people of the city.
Also consider, if three members of council apply for the vacant seat, essentially the next mayor will be determined by a majority of the remaining five members.
Let the people of Cape Coral vote and elect the next mayor.
