Dr George F Mangan
George F. Mangan, 90, a retired member of the U.S. Government Senior Executive Service, died in July in Cape Coral, Florida.
Dr. Mangan spent most of his career in Washington D.C. Where he entered government service in 1951. He held various scientific and administrative positions in the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research, and the Department of the Interior. Mangan retired from the Department of Interior in 1981 where he was research coordinator and Chief of the Physical Chemistry Division of the Office of Water Resources Research.
Dr. Mangan was a specialist in water resources and conducted research in membrane transport processes, saline water conversion, urban water problems and the use of systems analysis in water resource planning and development.
During his career Dr. Mangan represented the U.S. in numerous international water conferences and chaired the U.S. Government panel of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy dealing with national water problems.
Dr. Mangan, the author of over 50 books and technical papers was a member of the America Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Chemical Society, the American Geophysical Union, and the National Water Supply Improvement Association. Mangan was also a member of the Board of the Advances in Water Resources Journal.
After his retirement from the federal government Dr. Mangan took an active role in community affairs and was elected to the town council, mayor pro tem, and environmental commissioner of the town of So. Bethany, Delaware. He also served as a consultant to the University of Delaware on the water resource problems of the state. Mangan won many medals in Senior Swimming competitions around the United States, and was also an accomplished skier.
Dr. Mangan, a native of Lowell, Massachusetts was a 1950 graduate of St. Anselm College in Manchester, N.H. He received his MS degree in 1954 and his Ph.D. degree in 1956 from Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. During World War II, Dr. Mangan served in the U.S. Marine Corps and participated in the battles of Saipan and Tinian in the Pacific Mariana Islands. He was a lifetime member of the American Legion and the VFW, and the Marine Corps League.
Dr. Mangan was the son of the late George F. Mangan Sr. and Mabel (Delahanty) Mangan, and was married to Barbara (Mello) Mangan, who preceded him in death. He was also preceded in death by his brothers, Thomas and Teddy Mangan, and is survived by his sister, Eleanor (Mangan) Chambers, and his twelve nieces and nephews.
His Funeral was held on Thursday at the McDonough Funeral Home, 14 Highland Street, Lowell 978-458-6816. Burial took place at St. Mary Cemetery in Tewksbury. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations to the American Cancer Society.
