George William Gubanich

George William Gubanich of Cape Coral, formerly of Pittsburgh, went to be with the Lord before sunrise on Monday, Dec. 22, 2008.

He was born Dec. 26, 1926, in Braddock, Pa. He was preceded in death by his parents, Michael and Helen Mehalic Gubanich.

He proudly served in the U.S. Navy during World War II on the USS Guadalcanal as a first class seaman and section leader of Class R-12, specializing as a radio communications officer. After his tour he attended Northwestern University in Chicago where he earned a degree in electrical engineering. He began a career with Union Switch & Signal in Swissvale, Pa., in the wiring diagram division and later moved to the sales division. Being an expert in the sales field, he took a position with Westinghouse Airbrake in Wilmerding, Pa., where he became the general manager of mass transit sales.

He retired from the Airbrake in the spring of 1986 and moved to Cape Coral, where he resided until his death. He was an accomplished saxophone player in the Johnny Jay Orchestra during the big band era. He was an avid bowler and golfer.

He was also a die-hard Pittsburgh Steelers fan who loved the game of football. He also had a love for animals, especially his grand dogs.

He was a lifetime member of the Elks and joined the Cape Coral BPOE Lodge #2596.

He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather and friend. He leaves behind his loving wife of 58 years, Margaret Marko Gubanich; his son, William (Robin) of Lawrenceville, Ga.; son, David; daughter, Dawn of Cape Coral; and grandsons, David of Cape Coral and Alex of Lawrenceville, Ga.

Viewing will be today, Dec. 26, at Coral Ridge Funeral Home from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m.

Funeral Mass will be held Saturday, Dec. 27, at 11:30 a.m. at St. Andrew Catholic Church.
