Major (Ret.) Mary A. Osborne
Mary Osborne, 95, passed away Thursday, May 29, 2008, at Hope Hospice on Diplomat Parkway in Cape Coral. Born in 1913 in New York City, N.Y., she grew up on a farm in Kerhonkson, N.Y., and graduated as a registered nurse in Yonkers, N.Y.
In August 1942, she was assigned to the U.S. Army hospital ship, Acadia, serving in the Mediterranean and North Africa, and during the invasions of Sicily, Italy, southern France and the German Rhineland. Gen. Dwight Eisenhower cited the personnel of Acadia for commendable performances of duties. She received numerous decorations for these campaigns. Recalled to active duty in October 1948, she again served in the United States and Germany.
She held memberships in many local organizations such as the Southwest Florida Symphony Orchestra, Kiwanis International and military organizations including the Military Order of the World Wars, in which she was an active participant in recent years.
Surviving are several nieces and nephews, most of whom live in other states.
After a viewing at 10 a.m. Friday at the Metz Chapel, at 1306 Lafayette St., burial will follow at the Coral Ridge Cemetery Honor Garden, at 1630 Pine Island Road. Her close friends are invited to join the family for lunch at the Whiskey Creek Country Club, at 1449 Whiskey Creek Drive, Fort Myers.
