The Cape Coral Police Department has made an arrest in a homicide investigation in the southwest Cape.

Kenneth Bailey Roop, 52, of 1815 SW 30th Terrace, Cape Coral, was arrested Wednesday by police detectives and charged with second degree murder in the shooting death of Nicholas Rainey, 30, of 4541 Palm Beach Blvd., Fort Myers.

Police had received numerous calls regarding a man that had been shot in the driveway of the 1815 SW 30th Terrace home. Responding officers found Rainey dead in the driveway from multiple gunshot wounds, officials said in a prepared statement issued late Wednesday night.

According to that statement, police confirmed that there was a confrontation in the driveway between the homeowner, Roop, and Rainey, a door-to-door meat salesman who works for Blue Ribbon Steak and Seafood. Rainey was shot during the confrontation and died at the scene.

Detectives interviewed Roop at Cape Coral Police Headquarters and arrested him on the second degree murder charge.

Transportation to the Lee County Jail was still pending Wednesday evening.

“The Cape Coral Police Department grieves with the Rainey family at this time. Our number one priority now is to partner with our colleagues at the State Attorney’s Office for a successful prosecution and to bring justice to the victim and his family,” Lt. Tony Sizemore said.
