A Cape Coral man is accused of impersonating a law enforcement officer Wednesday by wearing a fake police badge at an airport in Fort Myers.

Joshua A. Watson, 28, of 1154 Hancock Creek Blvd. S., Apt. 203, was arrested at Southwest Florida International Airport and charged with fraud impersonation unlawful use police badge and carrying concealed weapon.

As of Friday, he had been released from jail on $2,000 bond.

Watson did not return a message seeking comment.

At about 3:42 p.m. Wednesday, Lee County Port Authority officers responded to the second level curb about a report of a suspicious man carrying a badge as if he was a police officer, according to a report.

Officers made contact with the man, later identified as Watson.

He was dressed in camouflage pants, a black shirt and tan boots and reportedly had a silver badge or shield on his waist with “POLICE” written across it. It looked like most law enforcement badges, officers noted.

Officers asked Watson if he was a law enforcement officer, and he stated that he was not. Watson added that he was “just a kung fu instructor.”

A common folding pocket knife was located in his left pocket.

Asked if he had any other weapons, Watson answered yes. He reached toward his back before being stopped by an officer. A knife larger than 4 inches was found in a sheath attached to a belt in the small of his back.

Watson stated that he did not have a valid concealed weapons permit. Officers did find in his wallet a concealed firearm permit from Washington that had expired and a “Police Self Defense Instructors” identification.

He was taken into custody and transported to the Lee County Jail.

Watson has a court appearance scheduled for July 31.
