A North Fort Myers pet owner has been cited with cruelty to animals after officials say he ran over his dog and then failed to obtain treatment for the animal.

Animal Control Officers responded to a call at 8229 Hart Drive on July 9 after the caller reported a dog had been run over by a vehicle driven by the dog’s owner, Charles Brown. The injury to Kane, a German shepherd, had reportedly occurred three days earlier.

Brown stated that he had contacted local veterinarians and low-cost clinics, officials said, but did not bring the dog to a clinic for an initial assessment of its injuries or for pain medication.

Animal Control Officers took Kane to Florida Veterinary Referral Center in Estero. Due to the severity of the injuries to his pelvis and spinal cord the dog was euthanized.

Brown was cited for cruelty to animals for failure to provide proper care following the injury which left Kane paralyzed, officials said, adding the dog’s suffering was also prolonged by lack of pain medication following the trauma.

Lee County Domestic Animal Services said that no pet need suffer neglect or pain regardless of its owner’s economic situation. Through the Animal Care Trust Fund pets of disadvantage owners can be seen for medical emergencies.
