Teens charged in shooting death of Lehigh delivery man
Two teens have been arrested in the shooting death of a 23-year-old Lehigh Acres man who was robbed and killed while making a food delivery Thursday.
Eddie Leonard, 16, of Fort Myers, and Dejeron Stewart 17, of Lehigh Acres, were each charged with homicide during the commission of a felony in connection with the death of Zhi Wei Huang.
Fort Myers Police were called to the Westchase apartments, 3746 Metro Parkway at 9:07 p.m. on June 28.
They found Huang suffering from a gunshot wound. He was transported to Lee Memorial Hospital where he died. Huang worked at a local restaurant and had just delivered food to an apartment at the complex.
Detective Vincent Doyle subsequently learned that Leonard lives at the address where the food was delivered.
Police say Leonard and Stewart had planned the robbery earlier in the day and then carried out the plan.
Fort Myers Police Chief Doug Baker commends the police work involved in the case.
“This is a tragedy. From what we’ve gathered the victim was a hard-working young man and helping his parents earn a living,” he said in a prepared statement released Sunday. “It’s also tragic to hold two juveniles accountable for such a careless, senseless act. I’m satisfied in giving the victim’s family some closure and I’m looking forward to the justice system holding the boys accountable as well.”
Leonard and Stewart were arrested without incident and transported to the Lee County Juvenile Assessment Center.
