Jake Mann likes a good peanut butter sandwich as much as the next person.

But a few special ingredients he adds to his PB sandwiches might make a big difference in how much money he has in his piggy bank at the end of the month.

A Sanibel School second-grader, Jake has been selected as a finalist in the Arnold Bread’s “Best in Class” Sandwich Challenge Contest. If he wins he will receive a $1,500 saving bond for college, and the winning school will receive $5,000.

Blueberries and bananas push out from the neatly cut whole wheat bread. Called “The P and Triple B,” it is peanut butter, bananas, blueberries and granola on Arnold Honey Wheat Bread.

“It’s just one of my favorite sandwiches,” he said.

Jake and his father, Todd, created the sandwich together a few years ago, said Jake’s mother, Renee.

Renee said she noticed the contest on a kid’s Web site and she and Jake decided to enter. She had forgotten about it until being notified that Jake was a finalist.

“It was hysterical,” she said. “It was such a good surprise.”

Jake has always been a healthy eater so it is not a shock that he devised a nutritious sandwich, Renee added.

Some of Jake’s classmates at The Sanibel School said they have already voted for the sandwich. Some recently mused over what Jake will do with his prize if he wins.

“Buy your own house,” one young man shouted.

But Jake already knows the destination of his potential windfall. It goes to his college fund.

School administrators said if Jake wins they will use the $5,000 to purchase books for the library and help with technology expenses.

“We are very excited about Jake’s creative sandwich,” said principal Barbara Von Harten. “Since he is an avid reader with a love of learning, I’m sure we will ask Jake for his input on book selection too.”
