A black bear chased up a tree by dogs in Fort Myers has been captured and will be relocated for safety reasons.

Fort Myers police were called to Price Avenue and Brown Street at 2:28 a.m. Saturday after the bear was spotted in the area.

Officers found the bear being chased by neighborhood dogs. The bear then climbed a tree in an empty field to escape and stayed there for several hours.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, a biologist and the Fort Myers Fire Department were called to assist. A few hours later an FWC officer was able to tranquilize the bear while ground units held a tarp from the fire department below.

The bear eventually passed-out and then fell into the tarp. The bear was not hurt and taken by FWC at 4:53 a.m. This is the same bear that was spotted early Friday morning on Gasparilla Drive. On Friday FWC had set up a trap to catch the bear but it didn’t take the bait and ended up across town, officials said.
