First Cure 4 Children Run set
A Cape Coral man has organized the inaugural Cure 4 Children Run for Saturday at Rotary Park to benefit St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
Check-in time for the 5K race is between 6:30 and 7:45 a.m., and it officially begins at 8 a.m.
Coby Palmer, volunteer coordinator, said he organized the run in memory of his mother, Linda Palmer, who recently passed away from lung cancer.
“It’s in my mom’s name,” he said. “My mom passed away from cancer and I put it in her name.”
An official from St. Jude Children’s Hospital in Miami will attend the event. Students from Trafalgar Elementary will present the representative with 48 cancer caps and 260 Easter cards for children staying at the hospital.
Nationally, St. Jude Children’s Hospital is centered in Memphis, Tenn., and deals with some of the most difficult cases of pediatric cancer in the world.
According to Palmer, there have already been 100 registrations for Saturday’s race and $2,000 raised for the hospital.
“We want to keep raising money and want people to donate,” he said.
Interested runners can register by entering keyword “Linda Palmer” at the Active Network (www.active.com), or visit The Run Shoppe (www.therunshoppe.com) at 3512 Del Prado Blvd.
Registration will stay open until the morning of the run.
Pre-registration costs $15 per runner, and signing up on race day costs $20.
Runners will receive a free T-shirt, light breakfast and trophies for their performance. They can also participate in a free raffle for gift certificates donated by local restaurants and stores.
