Trust fund set up for family; Driver found in canal leaves behind two kids
A trust fund has been opened for the children of a man who was discovered dead in a Cape Coral canal Monday.
Medical Examiners positively identified the man as Michael Huertas, 24, on Thursday.
According to family members, Huertas went missing Friday night. They passed out flyers and searched for Huertas with police.
On Monday morning, Cape police discovered Huertas’s green 2004 Cadillac CTS submerged in a canal at Northwest 19th Avenue and Northwest 26th Street. A police dive team recovered his body from the vehicle.
Police said Huertas drove eastbound on Northwest 26th Street and failed to turn right onto Northwest 19th Avenue, crossing an empty lot and entering the canal. The car was on its roof facing eastbound in the canal.
Huertas is survived by his wife and two children, ages 5 and 2.
The “Huertas Children’s Fund” has been opened on behalf of the kids at Wachovia Bank.
