Donation fund open for boy, 3, hit by car; Recovering at hospital

By Staff | Oct 10, 2008

A donation fund has been opened on behalf of Gage Root, a local 3-year-old recovering from a hit-and-run accident Tuesday in north Cape Coral.

Gage was in critical condition Wednesday, according to city spokesperson Connie Barron.

Family members said he was doing better Thursday, and was responding to physical stimuli.

Gage was being pulled by his aunt, Nikki King, 17, in a wagon Tuesday on their way back from Publix at Del Prado Boulevard and Kismet Parkway. Police said they were south of the intersection when Gage ran across Del Prado and was struck by a car.

He was air-lifted to All Children’s Hospital in St. Petersburg and is currently at Tampa General Hospital with multiple injuries.

Police said the driver fled the scene, though the owner of the vehicle, Kenneth Upmann, 42, of North Fort Myers, has been detained as a person of interest in the case.

Donations can be made at any Bank of America for Gage Root, account number 5747222.
