Lee County Supervisor of Elections' staffers are out in force to get all last-minute registrants on the voter rolls before the Monday, Oct. 6 deadline.

Staff will have a booth set up at the Health Fair in Cape Coral today, at the Wellness Center at Cape Coral Hospital, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Later today, they’ll be at the Bike Night event, from 4 to 8 p.m., helping those wishing to vote in the Nov. 4 general election register on time.

Vicki Collins and Joni Schopke, elections office staffers, were at Starbucks at College and Winkler in Fort Myers Friday morning, and then set up camp at the Yucatan Beach Stand Bar and Grill on Fort Myers Beach throughout the afternoon.

They said they're pleased with the turnout so far.

“It’s interesting to meet people registering to vote for the first time,” Collins said. “This week at Starbucks, there was an older couple who had never been registered. Ever. And I remember in 2004 we registered this guy who was 65 and he had never registered, never voted.”

Collins and Schopke said booths will be set up tonight at Regal theaters in Bonita from noon to 5 p.m.; Monday at the Boca Grande Library; and at Veteran’s Park in Lehigh Acres for the candidate forum on Oct. 11.

Though Monday, Oct. 6, is the final day to register to vote, voters can still stop by the booths to submit address changes or request ballots by mail. They can also get information on early voting.

Friday, at the Yucatan, Mark Dubay of Fort Myers Beach was registering to vote.

“It’s good that they did this. It’s nice,” he said. “If you don’t vote, you don't have a right to opinion.”

“Amen,” Collins said to that.

When asked if he had watched Thursday’s vice presidential debate, “Yes,” Dubay said. “The vice presidential debate, it seemed to be about personality branding –the young, bubbly, smiley Palin. It was interesting. They both seemed to be doing a lot of mirroring of what the presidential candidates seem to say. Biden kept bringing up the past, that seemed redundant, but I would feel a lot more confident with Joe Biden in the seat instead of her.”

Those wanting to register who cannot make it to one of the satellite sign-up locations, visit leeelections.com where you can print out an application, fill it out and send it in. The elections office said late registrants may not receive a voter card by Nov. 4, but that registrants can call in and find out where their voting precinct is.
