Ada’s market closes; gym still operational; Owners plan expansion
Thursday was the last day of business for Ada’s Natural & Organic Foods Supermarket & Deli in Cape Coral, located on Pine Island Road near Chiquita Boulevard. The market opened last fall.
An economic downturn in the Cape means businesses are struggling, but Ada’s Fitness Center next door is thriving and will move into the space vacated by the market.
“The gym is doing very well,” said the fitness center’s club manager, Scott Meyer.
The expansion will mean an extra 12,000 square feet for the gym, giving it a total of 30,000 square feet. Meyer said the newly renovated center will open in mid-2009.
Judy Bicking, an Ada’s Supermarket customer, said she will visit the company’s Fort Myers location, but less frequently.
“They have stuff you can’t get other places,” Bicking said. “Honestly, with the cost of gas, I’m probably going to combine some trips (to the Fort Myers store).”
Despite the closing of the Cape location, Ada’s will open new stores in Naples and Boca Raton within the next year, Meyer said.
Bicking, who owns the nearby shop Island Decor and More, said she is excited about the gym’s expansion.
“I was disappointed when I first heard, but most of my staff works out,” Bicking said.
