A new assisted living center for seniors citizens is slated to open in Cape Coral in the spring of 2009.

Windsor Senior Living will open Windsor of Cape Coral at 831 Santa Barbara Blvd. next year, bringing a contemporary facility and the opportunity for new jobs in the city.

The new facility — which will be built by J. McLauchlin and Company — will feature a whirlpool spa, private apartments for residents, mosaic tiling classes and other activities to gauge residents’ interests.

“Windsor is committed to providing a positive, reinforcing work environment that recognizes the values of all associates and fosters their individual growth and improvement,” said Marla Lopeman, senior vice president.

Besides helping residents maintain their lifestyles, Lopeman said Windsor will employ enrichment counselors to work with residents on finding the right activities for their interests and needs. Counselors will also learn what each resident likes and does not like.

The company has similar assisted living facilities stationed across the United States.

It is also expected to bring more jobs to Cape Coral. Currently the unemployment rate in Lee County is more than 8 percent. Representatives from Windsor said they will begin hiring 60 days before next year’s opening date.

“At a time when Lee County’s unemployment rate is over 8 percent, the Windsor of Cape Coral can make a difference for many,” said Lopeman.

The company will accept applications for a number of positions including nurses aids, licensed nurses, housekeeping, maintenance, dining services and other administrative positions. J. McLauchlin also intends to use subcontractors from the Cape to construct the facility.

The city of Cape Coral has a substantial aging population that could benefit from another assisted living center, although it does not have the greatest median average age of all the cities across the state.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the median age of a person living in Cape Coral is 41. Furthermore, nearly 20 percent of the local population is over the age of 65.

Representatives from Windsor expect the facility to fill up quickly.
