Sunset Celebration planned

By Staff | Jun 3, 2008

The Cape Coral Yacht Club will host its monthly Sunset Celebration starting at 5 p.m. Wednesday.

Cape Coral Yacht Club Recreation Specialist Mark Hunter expects 500 to 600 people to come out and enjoy the celebration, do some shopping and have a bite to eat.

“It’s a great family time,” Hunter said. “Everyone should come down and enjoy the casual beach music. KC’s (restaurant) has some great food, and they usually do some food specials and drink specials.”

The celebration, held the first Wednesday of every month, has become somewhat of a tradition in the Cape. Along with the live music, the event features a wide variety of vendors selling arts, crafts, jewelry and gift items. This is the celebrations’ seventh year.

With only 400 parking spots at the yacht club, Hunter warned that parking may be tight. But the Park Rangers are generally lenient about letting people park in grassy areas, and the boat ramp parking lot can also be utilized.

“It will be crowded down here,” Hunter said. “But we can get people in. The celebration lasts over a three-hour period, so there is a turnover.”

Though upward of 600 people are expected to attend the event, that is down from the winter months when sometimes as many as 1,500 people squeeze into the Cape Coral Yacht Club grounds to watch the sunset.

Hunter said the yacht club becomes “one crazy spot” starting in November, but now crowds are very manageable.

“We’ll have a good crowd,” Hunter said. “It’ll be a a great evening to catch the sunset and, hopefully, we won’t have any rain.”

Music will be provided by Smokin’ Bill, a regular at many Cape Coral restaurants and bars. Admission is free for the event.

The Cape Coral Yacht Club is at 5819 Driftwood Parkway.
