Two area teenagers were arrested by police late Monday morning after reportedly attempting to make off with more than $4,500 in jewelry, cash and other items from a residence in northeast Cape Coral.

The teens were unarmed and no one was home during the burglary, reports show.

Troy D. Buettemeyer and Kevin Donavin Abbate, both 15, have each been charged with unarmed burglary of an unoccupied dwelling, theft $300 or more but less than $5,000 and property damage over $200.

While responding to a call of a burglary in progress at approximately 11 a.m. in the 400 block of Northeast 19th Place, police detained Buettemeyer and Abbate after spotting them headed east in a vacant lot near the burglarized home, according to reports.

The two were found in possession of gold and silver jewelry, a cell phone, cash and other items belonging to the homeowner, said police. The total items are valued at $4,586.

Police said the homeowner was called to the scene and confirmed ownership of the property. He noted damages to a rear screen door, and a sliding glass door, a safe and his daughter’s piggy bank had been broken and burglarized.

Items in the master bedroom and kitchen also had reportedly been rummaged through.

Abbate and Buettemeyer were taken to the Juvenile Assessment Center in good health, according to reports.
