Two could face death
WEST PALM BEACH (AP) – A federal prosecutor told jurors Monday that death is the only appropriate sentence for two men convicted of gunning down a family of four on Florida’s Turnpike.
But defense attorneys for Daniel Troya and Ricardo Sanchez Jr., both 25, blamed the men’s violent upbringing.
Jurors began hearing evidence Monday to decide whether the two will be sentenced to death or life in prison without the possibility of release.
The men were convicted earlier this month on federal charges of armed carjacking resulting in deaths, conspiracy, weapons counts and drug offenses. Jurors can sentence the men to death if they unanimously find any number of aggravating factors, including: whether the victims were especially vulnerable because of their young age, if the family was killed for financial gain, or if the defendants had committed other serious acts of violence.
