Highway prank gets teens 4-year prison sentences
DELAND (AP) – Two central Floridians charged with being accessories to manslaughter for a prank that led to a police officer’s death have been sentenced to four years in prison.
Twenty-year-old Katie Jo Peller of Lakeland and 19-year-old Eric Biggs of Deltona were sentenced Friday. They had pleaded no contest.
Along with a third person, they placed a plastic lawn chair in the middle of Interstate 4 near Deltona in July 2007. A Longwood Police sergeant swerved to avoid it and hit a guardrail. He survived the crash, but was hit by another motorist when he got out of his car.
The admitted ringleader of the prank, 20-year-old Tyler Jenkins of St. Petersburg, was sentenced to nine years in prison.
