Rare white alligators on display in Orlando

By Staff | Feb 11, 2009

ORLANDO (AP) – Alligators are common in Florida, but a handful of the reptiles really stand out. Four white alligators with blue eyes are on exhibit at Gatorland in Orlando. Just a dozen of the ghostly gators are believed to exist, out of 5 million alligators in the United States. Experts say these gators aren’t albinos, which have pink eyes. These four are leucistic gators whose odd coloring is caused by a genetic defect.

They will remain at Gatorland through Labor Day.
