4 rare white alligators on display in Orlando
ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) – Alligators are common in Florida, but a handful of the reptiles really stand out.
Four white alligators with blue eyes are on exhibit at Gatorland in Orlando. Just a dozen of the ghostly gators are believed to exist, out of 5 million alligators in the United States.
Experts say these gators aren’t albinos, which have pink eyes. These four are leucistic (loo-SIS-tic) gators whose odd coloring is caused by a genetic defect.
They will remain at Gatorland through Labor Day in a special exhibit with no direct sunlight. Experts say prolonged exposure to ultraviolet rays would cause a dangerous sunburn and infection for white alligators.
The four gators each weigh more than 800 pounds and about 10 to 12 feet long. Staring into their blue eyes is believed to bring good luck.
