Memorial service for rabbi, wife killed in India

By Staff | Dec 7, 2008

BRANDON, Fla. (AP) – A memorial service in Southwest Florida remembered a couple slain at Jewish center in Mumbai as positive people who faced life hardships with courage.

Rabbi Mendel Rubashkin, a childhood friend of Rabbi Gavriel Noach Holtzberg, held vigil at his computer for two days last week as he waited to hear if the couple survived. Holtzberg and his wife, Rivka, died in the attacks.

Chabad of Brandon held a memorial Saturday at Rubashkin’s home. He said their first child died about a year ago from an incurable genetic disease. Their second child remains in a hospital in Israel with the same terminal illness. The couple’s toddler son, Moshe Holtzberg, was taken out of the center by an employee, and is now with his grandparents.
