Report: Fla. may top Crist’s renewable energy goal
TALLAHASSEE (AP) – A report delivered to state regulators says Florida can exceed Gov. Charlie Crist’s goal for using renewable energy but only if everything goes right.
If it doesn’t, Florida could fall well short of using wind, solar and other renewables for 20 percent of its power needs by 2020.
Navigant Consulting Inc. presented its report Wednesday to the Public Service Commission.
The study shows Florida’s five investor-owned electric utilities could get 27 percent of their power from renewables by 2020 under the best circumstances but only 6 percent in a worst-case scenario. The mid-range is about 15 percent.
The commission will vote in January on a new renewable energy rule. It then would go to the Legislature for approval.
