2,500 mourn death of Hollywood police officer

By Staff | Nov 26, 2008

HOLLYWOOD, Fla. (AP) _ More than 2,500 mourners turned out to honor a Hollywood police officer killed in a crash that is still being investigated.

Scores of people, most of them law enforcement officers from South Florida and as far away as Polk County, turned out to Calvary Chapel Fort Lauderdale on Wednesday for the funeral of 31-year-old Alex Del Rio. He was to be buried at Fred Hunter’s Hollywood Memorial Gardens later in the afternoon.

Del Rio died Saturday night after his patrol car slammed into a palm tree and burst into flames. It’s unclear why he lost control of his car, but authorities say he may have been pursuing a speeding motorist and swerved to avoid hitting a taxi cab. There were no other injuries.
