Cape Coral
Jacob Hilton Drake
Jacob Hilton Drake of Cape Coral was named to the honors list for the 2009 spring semester at Averett University in Danville, Va. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. John W. Drake. Drake is a freshman pursuing a bachelor’s degree in history social science with teaching certification.

Cape Coral library
School is out and it is a challenge to keep kids busy and contented during these dog days of summer. It’s not too late to participate in Lee County’s Summer Reading program at the library. It runs through July 31. Stop by the library to get more information. “Be Creative at Your Library” promotes continuous reading during the summer. SRT events, such as puppet shows, animal shows and more are free for children age 6 and older, but tickets are required and can be picked up at the Cape Coral Library. For teens in middle and high school “Read it! Watch it! Win it!” introduces teens to a host of recreational and education opportunities and involves them in crafts, game nights and many more entertaining events.
There are dozens of programs for children, teens and adults at the 11 Lee County Libraries available to all. Pick up the July/August library calendar at the library, or go online at: www.leegov.com/library for more information.

Lee County Library System also offers free access to books, DVDs, videos, books-on-tape, electronic resources and other items from a vast collection. The Lee County Library System makes it possible for people who ordinarily couldn’t visit the library to enjoy reading through the Bookmobile, Books-By-Mail, Talking Books and literacy programs.

Campers art shows
Summer Camp is in full swing at the Alliance for the Arts. Campers are busy crafting visual art projects, learning the literary arts and playing superstar onstage.
Friday afternoons, friends and family are invited to the Foulds Theatre to see a display of artwork and special performance by rehearsed campers. No two shows are the same. With a different weekly theme, parents and campers are always in for a treat.

Junior League recruitment socials
The Junior League of Fort Myers announces the dates for their Recruitment Socials. Ladies of all ages and talents who are interested in joining the Junior League are welcome to attend one of the upcoming JL socials.
The Recruitment Socials will be held in the Bistro area of the Paseo Community located one mile north of Daniels Parkway, at the northwest corner of Palomino Lane and Penzance Boulevard in south Fort Myers. The first social will be held on Sunday, July 26, from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. and the second social will be held on Aug. 6, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Contact the Junior League office for more information or for reservations at 277-1197.
Conference for substitute teachers
The Lee County Substitute Teachers, in collaboration with the College of Education at Florida Gulf Coast University, Fort Myers, and the National Substitute Teachers Alliance have joined forces to sponsor a National Conference for Substitute Teachers July 24-26, at the University in Fort Myers.

Kayaking Kids
Kayaking Kids will start at Bowditch Point daily and travel by vans to discover new sections of the Blueway each day. All equipment is included. Bring a hat, sunscren, bag lunch and water bottle. Programs run from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily and are open for children ages 9-14. All participants must pre-register at: www.leeparks.org or by calling 533-7440. Program dates are July 29, 30 and 31. The cost is $25 per session/day.
Triple Threat Musical Theatre

Boys & Girls Clubs
The Boys & Girls Clubs of Lee County Summer Enrichment Program, began June 15, and runs through August 14, and for just $10. a week, offers a safe and structured environment for a child to spend their summer at one of Lee County’s Boys and Girls units. The program also offers a healthy lunch and snack for children during the day. It cost $100 to sponsor a child for the entire summer.
