Cape Coral

Kayak fishing

In this kayak fishing class, held at the Cape Coral Yacht Club, learn the safety of kayaking, the different parts of the kayak, rigging, proper strokes and fishing procedures from the kayak. The first part of the class will be indoors followed by hands-on-instruction outside. For ages 16 and older. Class will be held on July 11 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The cost $35 for a child or $15 for an adult. To register and for information call 574-0806.

Cape Coral library

School is out and it is a challenge to keep kids busy and contented during the summer. It’s not too late to participate in Lee County’s Summer Reading program at the library. It runs through July 31. Stop by the library to get more information. “Be Creative at Your Library” promotes continuous reading during the summer. SRT events, such as puppet shows, animal shows and more are free for children age 6 and older, but tickets are required and can be picked up at the Cape Coral Library. For teens in middle and high school “Read it! Watch it! Win it!” introduces teens to a host of recreational and education opportunities and involves them in crafts, game nights and many more entertaining events.

English Cafe: 6:30 p.m. Tuesdays, July 14, and 28, and Fridays at 10 a.m., July 10, 17, 24 and 31. Practice English in a free, informal conversation session for adult ESOL and ESL students. Kids read down fines:Take care of them by reading. Children and teens can earn a $2 coupon for every 15 minutes of reading during the allotted time in the designated area of the library for ages 18 and under; 6:30 p.m. mondays, July 6 and 20 and Tuesdays, July 21.

Guitar Hero, jam it up at the World Tour Playoffs; 8:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Saturday, July 18, in the Marketplaza at Gulf Coast Town Center, off I-75, Alico Road, Exit 128.

Conference for substitute teachers

The Lee County Substitute Teachers, in collaboration with the College of Education at Florida Gulf Coast University, Fort Myers, and the National Substitute Teachers Alliance have joined forces to sponsor a National Conference for Substitute Teachers July 24 through 26 at the University in Fort Myers. Kayaking Kids

Kayaking Kids will start at Bowditch Point daily and travel by vans to discover new sections of the Blueway each day. All equipment is included. Bring a hat, sunscreen, bag lunch and water bottle. Programs run from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily and are open for children ages 9 to 14. All participants must pre-register at: www.leeparks.org or by calling 533-7440. Program dates are July 29, 30 and 31. The cost is $25 per session/day.

Edison & Ford Winter Estates

July at the Edison & Ford Winter Estates is highlighted with the return of Henry Ford’s Birthday.

Celebration and Estates Inventor’s Summer Camp as well as a variety of other special programs throughout the month of July. The July schedule of programs and events include:

New exhibit opening: “Music, Movies, & Dance with Edison & Ford” Opening mid-July, films, performances of period music on the Edison piano and other related program activities throughout the year. The exhibit is free with any paid Estates admission and Estates Members are free.

Space is still available at the Estates Inventor’s Summer Camp.

Registration is still open for summer camp at the Estates for a one of a kind experience, discovering, learning, inventing and creating to make learning fun.

All camp sessions will be held in the historic Edison Caretaker’s House (air-conditioned) although some of the activities will be held in the Estates outdoor program buildings.

LCSO Summer Youth Program

The Lee County Sheriff’s Office is offering students ages 11 to 13 a chance to interact with law enforcement in an educational environment.

The agency’s Summer Youth Program will be held at different Lee County schools in June and July. The sessions run from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and are offered at no cost. The upcoming dates and locations are:

June 29 to July 2: Cypress Lake Middle School.

July 6 to 9: Lehigh Acres Middle school.

July 13 to 16: Three Oaks Middle School.

July 20 to 23: Lehigh Acres High School .

Boys & Girls Club

Crowne Plaza Hotel at Bell Tower Shops announce it will be making a donation of over $1,000 to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Lee County to help fund their Summer Enrichment Program.

The money was raised via the recent concert by Beatles Tribute band “Let it Be” where over 250 gathered.

The Boys & Girls Clubs of Lee County Summer Enrichment Program, begins June 15, and runs through August 14,h and for just $10. a week, offers a safe and structured environment for a child to spend their summer at one of Lee County?s Boys and Girls units.

The program also offers a healthy lunch and snack for children during the day. It cost $100 to sponsor a child for the entire summer.
