– March 23: Word II. Cost is $40.

– March 24: Professional skills, a career transition workshop, from 6-8 p.m. Cost is $45.

– March 24-25: Access. Cost is $55.

– March 31: E-Mail and Internet. Cost is $40.

Book signing for Dennis A. Martin

Local author Dennis A. Martin will host a book signing from 1-4 p.m. Saturday at Walden Books, 4125 Cleveland Ave., Fort Myers.

FGCU’s Graduate Studies Spring Expo

Florida Gulf Coast University invites prospective students to attend the Graduate Studies Spring Expo from 5-7 p.m. Monday at the Student Union ballroom to learn about post-baccalaureate study opportunities at FGCU. Voluntary Pre-K Enrollment Day

The Early Learning Coalition of Southwest Florida, in conjunction with Community Coordinated Care for Children, invites all local families to attend the Voluntary Pre-Kindergarten Enrollment Day from 8 a.m.-1 p.m. March 14. The event will highlight the early learning programs of local child care providers offering the VPK program.

The VPK program is designed to prepare 4-year-olds for kindergarten and build the foundation for their educational success.

Evangelical Christian School

Recently, the Evangelical Christian School National Honor Society partnered with dosomething.org as they collected used blue jeans for the homeless. ECS students were encouraged to bring in old jeans and the school donated them to Aeropostale. Students collected 400 pairs of jeans that the local Aeropostale will donate to the homeless teenagers in the area.

Girls Going Places

Girls Going Places is gearing up for its May 6 event. The program identifies the most enterprising, community-minded teen girls in Southwest Florida who will compete to win national scholarships and prizes.

School counselors and principals must have their nominee forms submitted to Lynne Tarman at Alliance Financial Group, 14021 Metropolis Ave., Fort Myers, by April 15 to be included.

School principals and counselors not familiar with the program should contact Lynne Tarman at 561-2900.

PACE Center for Girls

The PACE Center for Girls is celebrating its second anniversary in Fort Myers. During its time, 152 girls have started new lives of responsibility, dignity, serenity and grace.

PACE is a Florida-based, not-for-profit organization, and the only statewide prevention program for adolescent at-risk girls in the nation. Its mission is to provide girls and young women an opportunity for a better future through education, counseling, training and advocacy.

10th Annual Reading Festival

Volunteers are needed for the 10th Annual Reading Festival to be held March 21 at Centennial Park. Opportunities are available for set up the day before and assistance during the daylong event, as well as clean up afterward. Lunchbox Theatre Series

The Lunchbox Theatre Series, at the Sidney & Berne Davis Art Center, presents:

Life Skills Center

The Lee County Life Skills Center, 3637 Martin Luther King Blvd., Fort. Myers, will have open enrollment for high school students wanting to receive their diploma. The school is set up in four hour sessions. Credits can be earned quickly. The cost is free. For information, call 332-3484.

Food drive

Lee County’s 13 Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps will hold a monthlong food drive to benefit Community Cooperative Ministries, Inc. through March 18. A kickoff event to promote the donation effort and to generate community interest is planned at South Fort Myers High School, 14020 Plantation Road, Fort Myers. Only non-perishable food items will be collected and stored at various school locations until they are delivered to CCMI’s soup kitchen and food pantry. For information, call 337-8204.

SAT prep class

The Jewish Federation of Lee & Charlotte Counties is offering a special prep class series to help get students ready for upcoming 2009 SAT tests. Class fee is $355 and includes all course materials. A minimum of six students is necessary for the class to be held, and a maximum of 12 students will be accepted. The 14-session classes will be held Mondays and Wednesdays starting March 16 for the June 6 SAT test. Classes will continue March 18 and 30; April 1, 20, 22, 27 and 29; and May 4, 6, 13, 18, 20 and 27. Math classes are held Mondays, and classes for the verbal section are held Wednesdays. Sessions, which run from 6:30-9 p.m., are held at 6237 Presidential Court, Suite E, Fort Myers. Classes are first-come, first-serve basis. Applications are available by calling 481-4449.
