Military Officer’s Club of Cape Coral
The Military Officer’s Club of Cape Coral will be having an unusual “fund-raiser within a fund-raiser” on Friday Jan. 23 when they have their annual shrimp boil to raise money for JROTC college scholarships for local high school students. Also at this event will be The Calendar Girls who will be doing a dance show for entertainment. They perform to raise money for “Paws for Patriots”, which raises money to train guide dogs for blinded soldiers. One of the guide dog puppies which is being trained will be brought to the performance. This is being held at the Cape Coral Yacht Club, 5819 Driftwood Parkway, Cape Coral at 6 p.m., with the guide dog puppy brought in at 7 p.m. and the dancers performing at 7:30. Police, firefighters football game
The City of Cape Coral police and firefighters will have their their annual charity football game (Blaze vs. Blue) on Jan. 24, at 6 p.m. at Ida Baker High School, 3500 Agualinda Blvd.
The annual football game has been named after Gene Griffin who was an engineer with the Cape Coral Fire Dept. and pioneer of this charity football game.
The game is to raise money for both organizations’ Benevolent Funds, which not only support their members and families in a time of need, but also support local youth charities.
There s also a raffle for a 2009 Harley Davidson Fat Boy with a custom trailer, which will be given away at half time of the game. Tickets are $20 and will be available at the gate. A raffle ticket stub can also be used as gate entry. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students.

Yappy yard sale
On Saturday Jan. 24 from 8 a.m. until noon, the Lee County Animal Care Trust Fund will hold a Yappy Yard Sale. The event will take place at Lee County Animal Services shelter at 5600 Banner Drive, Fort Myers, next to the Lee County Sheriff’s Dept. off Six Mile Cypress Parkway.
Proceeds will benefit the Trust Fund which supports low-cost spay neuter programs, assistance for homeless pets in Lee County, particularly those that are sick, injured or victims of cruelty.

Poker Run
Harley-Davidson of Fort Myers is working with AnySoldier.com and will be collecting packages full of personal care products for soldiers stationed overseas in Iraq & Afghanistan. The run is open to all riders.
Potential donors are asked to remember that refrigeration is an issue. Also, pork of any kind is strictly prohibited in Iraq, as well as x-rated material.
Poker run registration is from 10 to 11 a.m.with the last bike leaving at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 31. From HDFM the next poker run stop is the Iwo Jima Survivors Memorial Park, the run will continue to The Joint at Cape Harbour, the Paradise Tiki Bar and ends at Harley-Davidson of Fort Myers. An afternoon reception will feature food, live music, vendors, and guest speakers. For those who are not riding in the poker run, there will be food, vendors, live music, and adult beverages at the dealership from 11am-5pm. Habitat for Humanity
Lace up your sneakers for a home run on Jan. 31, to benefit Habitat for Humanity of Lee County. Verandah residents and First Bank will sponsor the 8K run, a 2-mile fun walk and tot trot at 8:30 a.m. in the Verandah community. The event is sanctioned by the Fort Myers Track Club. Pre-registration for the event is $25. You can register for the run on the day of the event at 7:30 a.m. for $30. Lunch, live entertainment and a raffle will follow the race.
