Mariner High students earn recognition
Sixteen freshmen at Mariner High School earned the distinction of being recognized as Sunshine State Scholars. Students were selected based on having scored a top score of Level 5 on the FCAT mathematics portion, combined with scoring a Level 4 or 5 on the FCAT Science portion. Students obtaining the honor of Sunshine State Scholar recognition are: Monica Amaya, Nicole Ballman, Joseph Benitez, James Bennett, Ronald Buckley, Shannon Claus, Richard Curtis, Peter Frumhoff, Robert Johnson, Alex Marsh, Josh Mena, Terence Piper, Samantha Suarez, Paul Teleweck, Kayshell Trudell, and Joseph Wallace.
Students are also participants in Mariner’s specialized Mathematics, Science and Technology (MST) Academy.
Five Mariner High School students have earned AP Scholar Awards in recognition of their exceptional achievement on Advanced Placement (AP) exams. The College Board’s AP Program provides students the opportunity to take college level courses and earn college credit while still in high school. Mariner High graduate Jocelyn Michaud met the College Board’s criteria for AP Scholar with Honor by receiving an average grade of 3.25 or higher and by passing four or more college level exams. Senior Shane Geffe and graduates Joseph O’Connor, Joseph Saxon, and Natalie Vonderheide met the College Board’s criteria for AP Scholar by receiving an average grade of three or higher and by passing three or more college level exams. By offering 19 different College Board AP courses, Mariner High’s rigorous AP and Pre-AP program provides motivated and academically prepared students the opportunity for success.
This month Mariner High will resume Florida’s “Ready to Work” testing program. Last year, through a joint effort between the school’s media, business and reading departments, Mariner led all of Southwest Florida as hundreds of students earned the RTW credential.
Those who exceed expectations are awarded a gold, silver, or bronze credential certifying the necessary basic skills to be successful in the workplace. For more information visit: http://floridareadytowork.com or members of the Mariner family can call Matt Schafer at 772-3324.
