FGCU Thanksgiving food drive

Florida Gulf Coast University’s social work program will be hosting a local food drive on Saturday at Belk in Cape Coral and the local neighborhood Walmart located on Skyline Blvd. in Cape Coral.

The FGCU social work students have partnered with Cape Coral Caring Center, located at 4645 SE 15th Ave in Cape Coral to collect non-perishable canned food for families in need during Thanksgiving. The center relies strictly on donations in order to provide for these families.

The FGCU BSW food drive will take place at two locations. One sponsor of the food drive is Belk in Cape Coral located at 2342 Surfside Blvd. Belk’s food drive will be held from 12pm to 4pm. Also on Saturday a food drive will be held at the Walmart, at 3920 Skyline Blvd. in Cape Coral from 3 to7pm.

Non Perishable foods needed include, cranberry sauce, stuffing mix, macaroni and cheese, canned vegetables and fruits, canned yams, pie filling, pie crusts, boxed deserts, pudding, jell-o, canned gravy,gravy packets, evaporated milk, disposable roasting pans, disposable pie pans, roasting bags, cornbread mix, bisquick mix, broth and canned meat

Free workshop for chronic back pain

A Free Workshop for Chronic Back Pain Sufferers will be offered Tuesday, Nov. 11. at 7 p.m. at the Hampton Inn in Cape Coral. Dr. James Zuk and the Spinal Aid Centers of America introduce this medical discovery that rids back pain without drugs or surgery and it is painless. This scientific discovery is so new that it is still considered investigational but there are no pills, injections or surgery to put you at risk. It is fully approved by the FDA and research from the American Journal of Pain Management reported an 86 percent success rate with cases of herniated discs, bulging discs, sciatica, stenosis, degeneration and Facet Arthrosis. There is no fee to attend, but you must call 540-7100 to register and reserve a seat.

Retired Registered Nurses

The Southwest Florida Society of Retired Registered Nurses will meet on Nov. 11 at 12:30 p.m. at Perkins on Cape Coral Pkwy. The program is Changing Faces featuring Vivian Phillips.

VNA flu shots

The Visiting Association of Southwest Florida (VNA) will provide flu and pneumonia shots at locations throughout Lee and Collier counties for the next six weeks to persons 9 years of age and older. VNA will bill Medicare Part B for covered beneficiaries. Bring your Medicare card. The charge for a flu shotis $30 and $40 for a pneumonia shot.

In Cape Coral the shots will be given on Wednesday, Nov. 12 from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. at Christ Lutheran Church at 2911 Del Prado Blvd. and on Thursday Nov. 20 from 9 to 11:30 a.m. at the Tony Rotino Senior Center at 5817 Driftwood Pkwy.

November events at Juniper Village

Juniper Village at Cape Coral, an assisted living community is hosting their secind annual food drive to benefit the Cape Coral Caring Center.

Each person who drops off a canned good will be entered into a drawing for a $50 gas card. The drawing will be held at 5 p.m on Nov. 30.

Take a tour and your name will be entered three times.

Juniper Village at Cape Coral is hosting a program, “Journey Through Your Golden Years: What You Need to Know” On Thursday Nov. 13 at 3 p.m.

John E. O’Neill, Esq. and Thomas E. Shipp Jr., Esq. (Licensed to practice law in the State of Florida) will present an information program on Durable Powers of Attorney, Health Care Surrogates, plus, Wills and Trusts. Learn the What, When and Whys of these often confusing documents. Due to the popularity of this program, reservations are required.

Zumba fitness party

Lake Kennedy Center, at 400 Santa Barbara Blvd., is infusing part fun into fitness by launhing Zumba classes.

Fun and music are the two special motivational ingredients. Utilizing the natural beat, tempo, and music transitions, the Zumba dances seamlessly flow from one toning, straightening, or cardio move into the next.

Classes will be held on Tuesday, Thursday and Fridays at 9 a.m. with instructor Linda Koogler.

Senior Friendship Centers

Daily hot lunches are provided at 11 Lee County “Friendship Cafes” to people 60 and older and volunteers of all ages. The cafes also offer free exercise programs, arts and crafts and more.

Local Friendship Cafe is located at Lake Kennedy Senior Center, at 400 Santa Barbara Blvd. from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Monday through Friday. Reservations for meals are required 24-hours in advance. A $3 donation is suggested to help cover the cost of the meals, however no one is denied a meal if unable to donate. You do not have to be a Lake Kennedy Senior Center member to attend.

Rhythm in Motion

Yoga classes are now being held at the Rhythm In Motion Dance Academy.

Brucie, Doris and Judi of the Purusha Center are offering several yoga classes per week. The program is really taking off, and classes are filling up fast.

Grant will help Goodwill renovate housing complex

Goodwill Industries of Southwest Florida has received a $97,500 Community Development Block Grant from the city of Cape Coral. The funds will be used to rehabilitate Laurel Oaks, an apartment complex for people with disabilities in southwest Cape Coral.

Goodwill’s housing agency, Southwest Florida GWI Housing Inc., Southwest Florida GWI Housing Inc., provides barrier-free housing for persons with physical disabilities, providing the opportunity for affordable, convenient, independent living to enhance the overall quality of life. Goodwill operates twelve HUD-approved housing complexes, ten of which are located in Lee County.

Renovations are slated to begin in early January 2009, and should be completed in February 2009.

Robb & Stucky to host art show

In recognition of National Alzheimer’s Awareness Month and in conjunction with the Alvin A. Dubin Alzheimer’s Resource Center, Robb & Stucky Interiors will host an art show and display of artwork featuring paintings by individuals experiencing various stages of Alzheimer’s disease or other memory impairment.

The public is invited to view the artwork during regular store hours from Nov. 3 through 21 at Robb & Stucky Interiors, located at 13170 S. Cleveland Ave., Fort Myers. Store hours are Monday through Saturday, from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m., and Sunday from noon until 5 p.m.

Additionally, Robb & Stucky will partner with the Dubin Alzheimer’s Resource Center and Gulf Coast Village to host a public reception with wine and hors d’oeuvres on Tuesday Nov. 11, from 6:30 to 8 p.m.

Injury Prevention Fair

Lee Memorial Health System will hold a Children’s Injury Prevention Fair on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Lee Memorial Hospital, 2776 Cleveland Avenue, in Fort Myers.

The fair is designed to promote injury prevention by combining fun activities and useful information for the entire family.

Special features include a Teddy Bear Clinic, car seat and helmet fitting stations, a helicopter, ambulance, fire truck and K-9 unit, safety house, Poison Control booth, “meet the trauma surgeons” table, and more. Hamburgers, hot dogs, popcorn and drinks will also be available.

Children are encouraged to bring their favorite stuffed animals to the fair and visit The Teddy Bear Clinic where nurses will pretend medical treatments on their toy and teach them what happens at hospitals as well as the role of doctors and nurses. This helps calm their fears should they ever need medical attention.
