April programs announced at Cape Coral-Lee County Library
The Cape Coral-Lee County Public Library is offering a rich variety of hands-on learning programs for visitors of all ages next month. Scan the following schedule of free library programs to see what will be open to the public:
Adults
— English Café
6:30 p.m. Tuesdays,
April 1-29
10 a.m. Fridays, April 4-25
Practice your English at this free informal-conversation session for adult ESOL/ESL students. The 90-minute session provides an opportunity for adult learners to practice speaking English with native speakers. Topics include everyday situations, current events and cultural areas. Craft Corner
— Knitting, Crocheting and Cross-Stitching
3:30 p.m. Mondays, April 7 and 21
Bring your ideas to light and needle a handmade treasure. Materials will be provided or bring your own project to work on. Registration is requested.
— Scrapbooking Crop
6 p.m. Monday, April 21
Join library staff for an open crop. Bring your own supplies: papers, photos and embellishments. Work on a project, learn new techniques and make new friends! Registration is requested.
— Book Discussion: Philippa Gregory’s “The Boleyn Inheritance”
2 p.m. Wednesday, April 16
The Boleyn saga continues with three power-driven women vying for a permanent place in King Henry VIII’s court. Come and discuss this compelling follow-up to “The Other Boleyn Girl.”
— Bagels, Books and Banter
9:30 a.m. Tuesday, April 22
Join other book lovers and come prepared to talk about a favorite book that you’ve read. Relax over coffee and bagels with old and new friends. Registration is requested.
Family
— Toddler Storytime
9:30 a.m. Tuesdays, April 1, 8, 22 and 29
9:30 a.m. Thursdays, April 3, 10 and 24
Children 2 years old and their caregivers participate in song, fingerplays and short stories. The success of this age group depends on adult participation and encouragement. Toddler storytime lasts approximately 30 minutes. Registration is required.
— Family Storytime
6:30 p.m. Tuesdays, April 1, 8, 22 and 29
10:15 a.m. Wednesdays, April 2, 9, 23 and 30
10:15 a.m. Thursdays, April 3, 10 and 24
This program is for the whole family and lasts about 30 minutes. Registration is required.
— Baby/Parent Rhyme Time
10 a.m. Saturdays, April 5, 12 and 26
Be prepared to tickle, jump and fly with your baby! These rhymes and songs are for infants, up to 24 months, accompanied by an adult. This 20-minute program is filled with songs designed to introduce rhyming and movement to infants. Registration is required.
— Growing Up With Books Vision and Hearing Screenings for Young Children
11 a.m. Saturday, April 12
Drop in for vision and hearing screenings for young children by a skilled health care worker. Receive a family packet that encourages reading and related activities at home. Interested families may apply to see if they qualify for child health insurance through the Florida KidCare program. Representatives will be on hand to answer questions and accept applications. (The Child Care of Southwest Florida Inc., Early Learning Coalition of Southwest Florida, 4C and the School District of Lee County’s Early Childhood Learning Services are co-sponsoring this program.)
Kids
— Preschool Storytime
9:30 a.m. and 11 a.m. Wednesdays, April 2, 9, 23 and 30
11 a.m. Thursdays, April 3, 10 and 24
Preschoolers (ages 3 to 5) attend this storytime independently while parents or caregivers wait nearby in the library building. This storytime includes activities that require more participation and a longer attention span. Each preschool storytime lasts about 30 minutes. Registration is required.
— Wii Gaming — Sports Spectacular!
2 p.m. Saturday, April 5
Play tennis, baseball or golf, bowl or box in the Storytime Room. Use the Wii Remote controller to mimic the actions of swinging a racket, bat or club, rolling a ball down an alley or bringing the left jab. People of all skill levels are welcome. A sign-up sheet in half-hour increments (five spots per time period) is posted in Youth Services. Once all 20 spots are filled, no other reservations will be taken.
— Book Bingo
2 p.m. Tuesday, April 15
Come and play Book Bingo! Learn about great books and win chances for prizes. For children age 6 and older but parents are welcome. Registration is requested.
— PS2 Gaming _ Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock
2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, April 19
Be the first to try the newest video game at the Cape Coral-Lee County Public Library and rock out to a star-filled soundtrack. Registration is required at the library. A sign-up sheet in half-hour increments (five spots per time period) is posted in Youth Services. Once all 20 spots are filled, no other reservations will be taken.
Teens
— Anime Club @ Your Library
6 p.m. Thursday, April 3
Join a group of teens with an interest in anime, manga and other interesting aspects of Japanese culture. Registration is required.
— Teen Poetry Open Mic Café
6 p.m. Thursday, April 10
The venue _ a coffee house. Bring and share a poem that you’ve written or one by your favorite poet. Juice, tea, biscotti and more will be provided. Registration is required.
— Teen Advisory Group
6 p.m. Thursday, April 17
Step up, teens! Join TAG and help library staff create programs and services just for you. Your opinion counts at TAG, so get involved and elect the hottest books, coolest sounds and sweetest activities for your generation. Seating is limited to 25 people. Registration is required and begins a month in advance.
